Atlanticism is a philosophy of cooperation among European and North American nations regarding political, economic, and defense issues. One who believes in Atlanticism is known as an Atlantist or an Atlanticist.
Individual examples include Tony Blair and Javier Solana. NATO is an Atlanticist organization, and the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, a production of Lockheed Martin (USA) along with partners Northrop Grumman (USA) and BAE Systems (UK), is an Atlanticist project.
On continental Europe, many Eastern European countries such as Poland profess a strong Atlanticist view. This is viewed in many cases as a result of the USA's stance against the Soviet Union during the Cold War, and a sign of wariness of Western Europe's stated commitment to the East. This wariness may be borne out of the historical behaviour of the major Western European countries in the first half of the 20th century. France had invaded eastern Europe during Napolean's reign and Germany had invaded many Eastern European countries in World War II—French security guarantees to these countries were quietly forgotten.
Spain's former Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar took a strong Atlanticist stand, as did Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
