CUTTING EDGE
The cutting edge refers to the leading part of a cutting tool such as a tool bit or knife and is the small focused area where the work is done.
Figuratively, cutting edge has come to describe the creations of the small number of persons or groups who are at the frontier of progress in a field, especially science. Another idiom for the next step beyond "cutting edge" is "bleeding edge". In the area of art and culture, "cutting edge" is sometimes a synonym for "avant-garde". In both cases, the term can be considered a cliché due to its overuse, particularly in marketing material.
