ROUNDHAY GARDEN SCENE

Roundhay Garden Scene is a 1888 short film credited as being the first film ever made.

It was filmed on Oakwood Grange Road in Roundhay, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England by Louis Aimé Augustin Le Prince. It features Adolphe Le Prince (Le Prince's son), Mrs Sarah Whitley (Le Prince's mother-in-law), Joseph Whitley and Miss Harriet Hartley walking around and laughing within the frame view.

Its date is verifiable since Mrs Whitley died in October 1888. Today, photographic copies of only parts of the paper filmstrip exist.

The film was recorded on celluloid photographic film through a Le Prince single-lens camera. While the original footage was probably shot at about 12 frames per second, the photographic copy is believed to be incomplete, and therefore current reconstruction of the film runs for two seconds and uses 18 frames.

It should be noted that all current reconstructed versions, made from the surviving still images, have been subtly corrected to remove the distortion evident when the unmodified frames are turned directly into a sequence of moving images. Some experts have, on the basis of these distortions, expressed doubt as to whether they were in fact made with a single-lens camera.
