Etymology

The word "scholar" is a relative of the Old English word for school (scolu) which in turn was derived from the Greek skhole, which had several different meanings. It was used to refer to a lecture or discussion, but also to leisure, or spare time and also "a holding back, a keeping clear" (Online Etymology Dictionary). This seems to imply that leisure and perhaps even some sort of isolation were long considered to be an integral part of the learning process.
