STEFAN KLEIN

Stefan Klein is an essayist and science writer. He was born 1965 in Munich, Germany and studied physics and philosophy at the Universites of Munich, Grenoble and Freiburg, where he completed his PhD with a thesis in Theoretical Biophysics. He was a science editor at Der Spiegel, a news magazine, (1996-1999) and a staff writer with GEO magazine (1999-2000). He now works as a book author in Berlin. His first work on evolution, Die Tagebücher der Schöpfung (2000) won critical acclaim, but it was his The Science of Happiness (Die Glücksformel, 2002) that made him receive recognition world-wide. A best-seller in many countries, this work was translated into 25 languages. His later books are on the working of chance in science, philosophy and every-day life (Alles Zufall, 2004, translated in 10 languages) and on the perception of time (Zeit, 2006). In his writing, Klein frequently sets off from concepts of practical philosophy (as happiness or luck) to explore what empirical science can to say on them. He won the Georg von Holzbrinck prize for scientific journalism in 1998 and is now considered one of the most influential science writers in Europe.
